A one-day course providing essential guidance on the nutritional needs of older people. Includes advice on nutritional assessment, catering, practical demonstrations and menu planning.
Using informal teaching sessions in a friendly environment you will learn about:
- the nutritional needs of older people
- the latest government reports and recommendations
- common nutritional deficiencies found in care homes and how to prevent them
- special diets and dietary issues related to older people
- practical cookery demonstrations of modified consistency diets – this is a
- very popular part of the course and includes opportunities to taste freshly prepared meals
- physical feeding problems and how to cope with them
- menu planning and budgeting
- the A–Z of risk factors in care homes, an established technique to assess the nutritional adequacy of catering in your own establishment
- water for health, covering recommended clear fluid intake: help and advice on how to incorporate water into the diet and the health benefits.
Who should attend?:
Essential learning for care home owners or managers, care staff, chefs and cooks. It is also a useful refresher for catering managers.

The trainers and speakers:
Sue Thomas, Principal Course Tutor, Chief Dietician specialising in the nutritional needs of older people; Neil Palliser-Bosomworth, Catering Consultant and invited specialist speakers including occupational therapists.
Date and venue:
The course will take place on Friday 20th November 2009
Registration from 9.00am to 9.45. Meeting starts at 9.45am – close at 4.45pm (full programme sent on booking)
The course will take place at RSPH, 28 Portland Place, London W1B 1DE. Nearest underground stations are Great Portland St and Oxford Circus. Both are within easy walking distance.
Fee and payment:
The fee for the course is £148*. Second place from same care home is £137 *Discounts available for multiple bookings, limited discounted prices on each course. Further information on request.
This fee includes the course manual, samples of nutritional supplements and equipment, lunch, refreshments and certificate of attendance.
Cheques should be made payable to the Royal Society for Public Health, and to guarantee a place, returned with the booking form. We also accept payment by BACS transfer and all major credit/debit cards.
Refunds of the course fee will only be made if notice of cancellation is received in writing two weeks in advance of the course. There is a non-refundable element of £38. After this time, no refunds will be given.
Substitutions can be made at any time.
