  1. The Lancet Conferences: HPV and Cancer 2010

    12 November - 13 November 2010

Human papillomavirus (HPV) is purported to be the proximate cause of 10% of malignant diseases in women, and HPV-associated cancers account for 5% of the total global cancer burden. These include those of the cervix, vagina, vulva, anus, and oropharynx, and, more recently, those of the head and neck region. Although the link between HPV and cancer has been sufficiently proven, much uncertainty surrounds the effect of the new HPV vaccines on these cancers and the future clinical management of HPV-associated cancers.

This conference will provide an opportunity for regional and international leaders from the oncology community to address the growing public-health and daily practice issues associated with HPV and cancer.

    16 November 2010

Venue: West One, Oxford Circus, Central London

With a new government in place, it is a good time to assess how policy around the health of the working age population has changed, what the future direction is likely to be, and what more could or should be done to meet the dual aims of a productive labour force and improved public health.

This year's IES policy conference draws together influential speakers for a debate on the relationship between population health and the labour market.

  6. MHF symposium on men and physical activity

    25 November 2010

The MHF in partnership with Royal Society of Public Health is organising a symposium on men and physical activity for November 2010.

Building on the the theme from this year's Men's Health Week in June, the event from the Men's Health Forum will bring together a range of people with expertise in physical activity, sport, men’s health, health promotion, health policy and related areas to discuss three key issues:

    • What do we know about men’s participation in physical activity/sport and about how stadia can be used to engage men in health initiatives, including case studies of effective practice.
    • What do we not know but need to know.
    • What are the next steps in terms of research, policy development and practical action.
A report is planned that can be used to support longer-term progress in this field inculding case studies highlighting the different ways of working effectively with men.

MHF development manager Kristin McCarthy said: 'It is well-known that too many men are sedentary and that, as a result, many are at greater risk of ill-health and premature mortality. What is less clear are the barriers to men being more physically active, how these might differ from the barriers for women, and how these can be overcome most effectively.'

The MHF hope this will help to maximise the public health impact of major forthcoming UK sporting events including the London 2012 Olympic Games and Paralympic Games, the Commonwealth Games (2014) and the cricket World Cup (2019).

This is an invitation-only event aimed at those with with existing knowledge of men, physical activity/sport issues or with a special interest in the subject. If you would like to receive an invitation, please contact MHF and let us know why you would like to come.
