About Shaping the Future

July 2005 saw the publication by the Department of Health and Welsh Assembly Government of Shaping the Future of Public Health: Promoting Health in the NHS.
The report set out to help define the roles and development needs of specialised health promotion staff working in Primary Care Trusts in England, Local Public Health Teams in Wales and in local government. It is also of relevance to staff in third sector organisations.

Following discussions with the Department of Health and Welsh Assembly Government officials, the Royal Society for Public Health and three national public health bodies agreed, in 2006, to work together to take forward the Report’s recommendations, working in partnership with other organisations.

  • The Royal Society for Public Health (RSPH [Royal Society for Public Health]) leads and hosts the collaboration, and focuses on advocacy for health promotion and its workforce
  • The Institute of Health Promotion and Education (IHPE) works with the RSPH [Royal Society for Public Health] to give a voice to the workforce
  • The Faculty of Public Health focuses on professional standards, education and training
  • The UK Public Health Register is responsible for regulation of the workforce

The work of the Shaping the Future Collaboration is part-funded by the UK Departments of Health. The Society of Health Education and Promotion Specialists (SHEPS) in Wales work in partnership with the RSPH [Royal Society for Public Health] and the Collaboration. We also acknowledge the support of the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health (CIEH), the National Public Health Service for Wales and the UK Public Health Association (UKPHA).
