UKPHR consultation report: Developing a regulatory pathway for public health practitioners

This report summarises the progress to date in developing a regulatory pathway for public health practitioners and presents the results of the consultation on the draft standards for regulation and the proposals for a devolved assessment process.

The consultation gained considerable interest from the field with over 50 electronic responses from individuals, groups and organisations, and over 200 individuals attending consultation events. The need to invest in the development of the practitioners to achieve a properly trained, effective and professional public health workforce has been stressed.

Shaping the Future hosted consultation meeting on the agreement of internationally recognised core competences for Health Promotion

In the light of the collaborative consultation process that the International Union for Health Promotion and Education (IUHPE) is undertaking with key leaders in health promotion around the world to solicit feedback on the Galway Consensus Conference Statement, the Shaping the Future Collaboration hosted a consultation meeting with 25 health promotion specialists from all over the UK on 27 May 2009 in London.

Jenny Griffiths and Viv Speller have collated the findings and recommendations that were made at the meeting and prepared a report to be submitted to IUHPE consultation on 1 June. Read the  RSPH-Stf Response Galway Consensusor contact Nelly Araujo, tel: 020 73177 1622, email: naraujo@rsph.org.uk

This represents an important next step in the process of developing universal core competencies for health promotion in a localized assessment of the impact these newly articulated domains of core competencies will have, as well as the likely obstacles and requirements for translating them into practice.

At this meeting, the UKPHR updated on the outcome of their consultation on practitioner regulation, please click here for details. RSPH informed about the new European Union funded project to develop competency-based standards for health promotion across Europe, and Jenny Griffiths informed on The Social Marketing Functional Map which pretends to embed Social Marketing in Health Promotion for the development of a Marketing and Sales Standards Setting Body, please download the  Social Marketing Functional Map March 2009.

Survey

Alcohol Concern, the Faculty of Public Health, the Royal College of Nursing and the Royal College of Physicians have today launched a survey for public sector workers to have their say on the Government’s proposed code of practice for alcohol sales.

The proposed mandatory code, published on 13 May by the Home Office, bans drinks promotions which encourage irresponsible drinking and aims to help drinkers make healthy choices. A set of national conditions is supplemented by a set of optional, local conditions, which can be applied at the discretion of local councils to hotspots for alcohol crime.

Please click here if you’re a public sector worker and would like to complete the survey. The survey will close for responses on 8 July 2009.
