Application process for the 2010 Health Promotion and Community Well-Being Organisation and Partnership Awards closes end of April.
The Royal Society for Public Health (RSPH) has had a very positive response to the Awards this year and would like to thank all those organisations who have enquired about participating. The closing date for the application is April 30th and we would encourage your organisation, if you have not done so already, to be part of it and to see the benefits that can be gained. In addition, the RSPH is now able to offer some financial support to organisations who want to take part in the scheme but who may have been prevented due to restrictions in their funding.

New guidance to help early diagnosis of cervical cancer in young women
The RSPH Royal Society for Public Health, supported by Sanofi Pasteur MSD, has successfully led a national Human Papillomavitus (HPV) education programme to raise awareness and understanding about HPV and cervical cancer. The programme was launched in March 2008 and was well received with 100,000 copies of the ‘HPV and Cervical Cancer the Basic Leaflet’ being distributed and 12,000 education packs ‘HPV and Cervical Cancer – What You and Your Pupils Need to Know’ also distributed upon request.
However, cervical cancer has remained at the forefront of the government’s agenda, so much so that a new guidance has been developed to help GP’s identify symptoms and diagnose young women with cervical cancer. Clearly demonstrating the importance and need to educate young people to make informative decisions to protect themselves against cervical cancer. Find out more>
The guidance was prompted after a working group of the Advisory Committee on Cervical Screening (ACCS) began looking at the management of young women with gynaecological symptoms. It was found that there appeared to be long delays in diagnosis from when the women visited their GP because they had not received a full pelvic examination.
Thus the new guidance will provide GP’s with an easy to follow procedure to help with the management of these young women and will re-enforce the existing NICE guidelines around gynaecological symptoms.
National Clinical Director for Cancer Sir Mike Richards said, "We have heard from a number of young women under the age of 25 who developed cervical cancer and they all had symptoms but did not receive a full pelvic examination to check for abnormalities in the cervix.
"To help GPs follow the correct procedure we have produced a pathway which maps the steps they need to take when women aged 20-24 present with post-coital bleeding and bleeding between menstruation."
