What's Good for the Climate is Good for Health

23 November 2009

The RSPH has launched a new one day course explaining how climate change affects health and giving practical advice on how to reduce carbon emissions in the workplace and wider community.

There is no doubt that climate change is a major threat to health in the UK and around the world. This course gives an overview of the health impacts of climate change, showing the link between health and the natural environment. It outlines the health benefits of action on climate change and encourages debate on the development of a low carbon society as the next great health advance.

Professor Richard Parish, Chief Executive of RSPH comments “Health practitioners with an interest in making a difference have a unique opportunity to influence national and international policy, and to lead by example. Policies which reduce carbon emissions can also lead to reductions in health inequalities, heart disease, cancer and other major health problems. “

Jenny Griffiths OBE, the course leader, adds “Climate change is a huge challenge and planning a healthy, sustainable, low carbon community can seem a daunting task. This one day course shows how you personally can make a real difference and how you can help others change their behaviour. “

Participants in the first course, taking place on February 2nd 2010, will receive a free copy of the book, The Health Practitioner’s Guide to Climate Change, published in September 2009, and described by the President of the Royal College of Physicians as a “wake-up call for all health professionals”.
