The causes of  poor health behaviours and high levels of mortality or morbidity can be many and varied. For individual locations and populations specific issues can be identified. It is important that once the key issues are known then an appropriate strategy is developed.

The table is designed to give insight into the issues that might affect health status and behaviour. It illustrates the range of possible influences: environment physical and social, culture, community safety, lack of social capital, personal conditions and capability. This table can be read in conjunction with the diagram on page 9 “The Determinants of health and well-being in our neighbourhoods”.
