Level 4 Diploma in Health Emergency Planning

Emergencies, whether man-made such as road or rail disasters; natural such as flooding or other extreme weather conditions; or the result of terrorism have the potential to cause disruption for communities on a large scale and present major operational problems for the National Health Service. Organisations within the NHS, such as Primary Care Trusts and Strategic Health Authorities therefore need to plan and prepare for such emergencies. In addition, the Civil Contingency Act (2004) imposes duties on all NHS bodies with regards to civil protection.

This qualification is designed principally for senior supervisors and managers who require the knowledge and understanding necessary to participate in the development, evaluation and operation of emergency plans. The qualification concentrates on the need for emergency management, the design and construction of emergency plans and the operation of emergency plans.

This programme is usually delivered as seven separate days over several months. The qualification is divided into three units (Health Emergency Management, Design and Construction of Health Emergency Plans and Operation of Health Emergency Plans) and each will be assessed by assignments.
