Food Safety Qualifications

RSPH is pleased to announce that it has been successful in its submission to QCA (Qualifications and Curriculum Authority) of a suite of food safety qualifications for the catering, retail and manufacturing sectors.

In order to obtain this accreditation RSPH had to work closely with the relevant sector skills councils (SSCs), that oversee vocational qualifications for their sector

These SSCs are: People 1st for catering and hospitality (catering sector qualifications are also appropriate for candidates working in the care sector), Improve for food and drink manufacturing, Skillsmart Retail for the food retail sector and Lantra for the land-based sector.

These qualifications fall into following 4 main sector categories:

Existing Centres

RSPH is the first, and currently only, awarding body to have this range of qualifications accredited across all of the sectors. Additionally the accreditation period for the following qualifications has been extended to 31st December 2006

RSPH Intermediate Certificate in Food Safety
100/1538/3
RSPH Advanced Certificate in Food Safety 100/1498/6
These new qualifications replace the Foundation Certificate in Food Hygiene, Intermediate Certificate in Food Safety and Advanced Certificate in Food Safety. However, the accreditation period for the Intermediate and Advanced Certificates has been extended to 31st December 2006, so centres will not have to switch over to the new Level 3 and Level 4 Awards until they are ready to do so.

Candidates registered with RSPH for the Intermediate and Advanced qualifications before December 31st 2006 can take the exam and obtain the qualification up to December 31st 2007.

This is to allow centres time to change over to the new qualifications. Any candidates registered with RSPH for these qualifications before the end-date can be entered for the exams up to 31st December 2007.

The new syllabuses and specimen exam papers are available on the qualifications section of the website.

Further Information

If you have any queries about the new qualifications, please do not hesitate to contact a member of the qualifications team (examinations@rsph.org), however, we have tried to anticipate some of your questions, and answers to these can be found here.

The new qualifications are sector-specific, however, if you need to teach a mixed group of candidates from different sectors the RSPH Qualifications Certificate in Food Hygiene Awareness and Fundamentals of Food Hygiene awards remain unchanged and can be used with any group providing you do not need to offer a QCA Approved qualification to access funding.

If you require a QCA accredited qualification for your candidates, follow the links below for tables comparing the syllabuses for the different sectors to help you to develop a teaching scheme for delivering the qualifications to mixed groups.
