Derby City Council’s Livewell service offers free 12-month healthy lifestyle programmes to support people to lose weight, stop smoking and improve their overall wellbeing.
RSPH has accredited Livewell’s eight-week ‘Lose Weight, Feel Great’ course, which is offered to participants as part of their 12-month journey. The course comprises eight weekly sessions which help participants to understand the basics of healthy eating and how to make changes to their eating patterns to help reduce their weight. The course also covers wider issues such as the role of physical activity in controlling weight, the importance of positive mental wellbeing and healthy eating on a budget.
RSPH’s in-depth review confirmed that the programme covers relevant health guidelines and is very engaging for participants. The programme helps participants to set their own goals to make their own long term positive changes. RSPH was particularly pleased to see that the sessions take place at local community sites at times to suit the participants.

Diane Jones, the Livewell Nurse who developed the course, added: “We’re proud to receive this prestigious recognition from RSPH which demonstrates the quality and effectiveness of our training in supporting our clients to successfully change their behaviour. It uses evidence based techniques to support people to take a more mindful approach to eating, drinking and exercise. Clients tell us they love the social side of the course, our practical resources, the accountability of being weighed every week and our key topics relevant to losing weight for good.”
Participants of the ‘Lose Weight Feel Great’ course said:
- John Bancroft: “Cutting out sugar and being more conscious about what I am eating has reduced my daily blood sugar readings. I have also reduced the size of my plates and portion sizes.”
- Faith Hubson, who lost 6lbs on the course, said: “The course was very informative and gave me the confidence to talk about my weight issues. I enjoyed coming to the meetings every week and seeing my new friends.”
- Husband and wife, Kevin and Julie attended together. Kevin said: “Out of all the diets I have tried, this course has helped me to lose weight. My overall medical conditions and wellbeing are also so much better.”
