This qualification enables users to gain basic knowledge and understanding of the importance of food hygiene, associated food hazards, good hygiene practice and controls based upon an awareness of food safety management systems. This is important for understanding and maintaining good practice in the handling, processing and preparation of safe food.

Level 1 Food Hygiene Awareness covers:

  • The need for food hygiene;
  • The importance of food poisoning bacteria;
  • Hygiene procedures and food safety management systems.

Richard Burton, Director of Qualifications, RSPH, said: “This e-learning is the perfect introduction to food safety. For employers it will also provide a useful revision tool for their staff or for them to check the knowledge and understanding of new recruits.”

Learners will have access to the course through our eLearning platform. There are three topics and revision quizzes throughout to test learners on their knowledge. The programme is completed in four hours, and is worth four CPD points. On successful completion of the programme, learners receive an RSPH CPD completion certificate. Our online courses track user’s progress so can be completed in multiple sittings.

To obtain the RSPH Level 1 Award in Food Hygiene Awareness, users will need to sit an invigilated exam in the RSPH head office in London or at an approved RSPH Centre.

This qualification is appropriate for anybody wishing to have an awareness of food hygiene. It has also been designed to help the food and catering industries to provide training to a safe level for those who perform 'low risk' tasks such as clearing tables, maintaining stores, 'meals on wheels' and other such similar duties.

This will be a useful resource for RSPH centres, as they can offer the qualification as an online course in preparation for assessments.

By the end of the course, learners should be able to demonstrate that they can:

  • Understand the need for food hygiene;
  • Understand the importance of food poisoning bacteria;
  • Understand hygiene procedures and food safety management systems;
  • Understand their legal responsibilities as a food handler;
  • Understand the importance of personal hygiene in a food area.

Users will receive a certified CPD certificate upon completion.
