My name is Cath Higgs and I work for Newport City Council’s Prevention Team as a Family Support Worker. Myself and colleagues work throughout Newport supporting children, young people and their families who may be having a difficult time for a variety of reasons. Behavioural issues, mental health, and domestic abuse are just some examples of the support we can provide.

We receive referrals from a variety of agencies including schools, G. P’s, Police and also from the families themselves. We work closely with Social Services to reduce escalation to a statutory services or supporting families after Social Services involvement.

My colleague and I are based at Millbrook Primary School in Bettws Newport. Being based in the community has the advantage of being able to be a drop-in for school staff, other professional agencies and local Police.

We work very closely with our CSO Steve Metcalfe-Davies, he has worked on the estate for the past 10 years and is familiar with the families on the estate. If a young person becomes known to Steve for either being a vulnerable young person or someone being highlighted as being involved with Anti-social behaviour, Steve is able to speak to the families and offer the support of the Prevention Team and where possible a joint visit will take place to hopefully engage the family at the earliest opportunity. This puts the emphasis on early intervention, which is key to a positive outcome for the young people and their families.
