HPV programme

In September 2008, the UK introduced a national programme to vaccinate all girls aged 12-13 against the human papilloma virus (HPV). The RSPH was at the forefront of providing educational resources for health professionals, teachers, healthy schools co-ordinators, parents and young people to ensure that informed action was taken to protect young people against cervical cancer.
Resources were designed to support goverenment messages amd help teachers, school nurses and health professionals explain to students, but specifically girls that:
  • Almost all cervical cancers are caused by a virus (HPV) that can be vaccinated against
  • Vaccination is available (when and how)
  • Some type of HPVs cause genital warts 
  • Protected sex and cervical screening are still essential.
