Salmonella is one of the most well-known causes of food poisoning in the UK, and outbreaks linked to a wide range of food items are fairly commonly reported in the scientific and national press.
This webinar discusses the epidemiology and sources of Salmonella bacteria in the food chain and the illness which people can experience. There will be an explanation of Whole Genome Sequencing and how the use of this technology is revolutionising the detection and investigation of outbreaks of Salmonella, as well as improving our understanding of the sources and transmission routes of Salmonella in the UK and globally.
There will be a discussion of recent outbreak investigations and new research findings, as well as a description of practical steps to help limit the risk of infection caused by this group of food poisoning bacteria. The “British Lion” quality scheme for eggs will also be described, together with its significant impact on the reduction in Salmonella bacteria in the British egg supply.
