The Royal Society for Public Health (RSPH) has announced its accreditation of NHS England’s Foundation Programme in Public Health – Levels 1 & 2. This programme has been piloted through Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council and each level of the programme is delivered via four on-line classroom sessions. It aims to provide learners with core knowledge about Public Health, supporting the idea that tackling health inequalities is everybody’s responsibility. The course includes a focus on tackling health inequalities, a life course approach to Public Health, epidemiology, systems leadership and the design and delivery of population health initiatives.

Course participants generally work in roles which allow them to influence the public’s health. These include staff working in the NHS or delivering NHS services, the wider health and care workforce and those working in local authorities and voluntary organisations. Feedback from participants has been excellent, with learners commenting on the positive influence of the programme on their working approaches, as well the clear impact on their learning and development.

Janice Constable, RSPH Membership and Educational Services Director, commented:

“We understand the importance of providing Public Health education for all those who are in a position to help to reduce health inequalities. This engaging programme fills a gap in the provision of core Public Health knowledge, helping learners to improve the positive health impacts of their work. The programme now joins the wide range of health, wellbeing and hygiene focused programmes accredited by the RSPH”.

Val Barker, Head of School, School of Public Health Yorkshire and the Humber commented:

“We are incredibly proud of the Foundation Programme in Public Health, it closely aligns with our vision of Public Health as everyone’s business.  The programme offers a high quality learning offer for the wider workforce helping us to embed Public Health knowledge and skills across the system.  We are pleased to be accredited by the RSPH and look forward to continuing to deliver the programme across the North East and Yorkshire and the Humber”.
