To support the wider public health workforce, RSPH has launched education pathways to provide equitable, accessible and diverse routes public health careers, supporting excellence at every level and providing a skilled workforce to support the delivery of preventative public health services from the ground up.
These pathways support graduates and workers looking to start a career in public health, professionals looking for recognition, career change or progression opportunities, and employers looking for a way of recognising the contribution of the workforce.
There are two ways to enter an RSPH educational pathway:
Route 1: RSPH modular pathway
This pathway is aimed at anyone working within the wider public health workforce. It is designed to help you to gradually accumulate a body of qualifications and training that can support:
- Entry into other careers within the wider workforce and the core public health workforce.
- Progression within your respective field or sector.
- Recognition of your skills, impact and contribution to public health.
The modular pathway is designed to span the full scope of RSPH education and training, with points assigned against all qualifications, training or accredited programmes. You will be able to self-select modules to complete 60 points in total over 12 or 18 months.
The pathway is offered at two levels, Level 2 and Level 3, with a mandatory qualification at both levels: the Level 2 Award in Public Health.
- Create your Education Hub online account
- Select your pathway option (Associate or Member)
- Add your chosen modules to reach 60 points
- Start your learning!
The level 2 (associate) pathway has a 12-month timespan, while the level 3 (member) pathway needs to be completed within 18 months.
All Pathway learners must complete the RSPH Level 2 Award in Public Health. You can do this online, via self-directed eLearning, or through one of RSPH’s approved training centres. This baseline qualification is worth 20 points, and you can then self-select the other education modules to reach the 60-point threshold.
You can select any of the modules available through the Education Hub, but learners completing the Level 3 Public Health Member Pathway must choose at least one module at Level 3.

Route 2: RSPH sector pathways
Our sector pathways are aimed at people working within specific areas of the wider public health workforce or looking to gain employment within those sectors. They are designed to help identify:
- Entry points into a career area.
- Opportunities for career development within your respective field or sector.
- The educational opportunities that can help them to progress within your career area.
RSPH’s pathways are designed in partnership with key organisations and bodies within their respective sectors, boosting their value to employers.
Whilst all our pathways vary according to the needs of their sectors and learners, they typically consist of a series of regulated qualifications between Level 1 and Level 5.
The point at which you enter a pathway is based on both the requirements of the sector, as well as your current skills and experience. A pathway could be accessed by someone looking for employment within the sector, or by an experienced practitioner looking to develop their skills and progress to the next stage of their career.
Over 2025, we are launching sector pathways in the following areas:
- Anatomical Pathology Technology
- Social Prescribing
- Emergency Planning, Preparedness and Response (EPPR)
