How Did you get into Pest Control?

This was originally my Mother-In-Law's business and I was doing admin for her during lockdown. She had established a great little business and I was looking for a change, so she asked if I would take over as she wanted to retire.

I found a trainer about an hour away, studied and took my exams on my timetable – I'm a wife and Mum and needed it to work around my job and family life so the trainer was able to accommodate me. I passed first time and then slowly but surely took over the business.

How has your career developed since you started?

I'm constantly learning and building my business on my terms. I'm slowly specialising in rodent control, which is ultimately what I want to do. It's where my passion lies.

Pest Control is what you make it. You can be broad or you can specialise – that's the beauty of running your own business. I'd love to be able to train or mentor other pest controllers in the future.

What is the most rewarding part of your job?

What part isn't rewarding?! Problem solving is the main driver for me and that I run my own business on my own terms. It's fits around my family perfectly. 90% of the time I have a great work/life balance.

What would you say to someone considering a career in Pest Control?

Pest Management goes much deeper than you would first perceive and that's what makes this job so varied and rewarding. It's a career that's always progressing knowledge wise. Physicality makes up a small percentage of what we do, as does the 'dirty' factor so don't let that put you off!

There are loads of us out there that want to share how great this career is, don't hesitate to reach out to the industry if you want to know more!
