How Did you get into Pest Control?
After graduating with a degree in forensic science, I initially set out to build a career in that industry. However, due to limited opportunities in that field at the time, I joined a company as part of their graduate programme.
It was intended to be a short-term stepping stone, but very quickly I realised that pest control offered many of the same challenges and problem-solving elements I had been drawn to in forensics. That initial opportunity gave me a route into an industry I had not previously considered, but one that I’ve since built my career on.
How has your career developed since you started?
I began as a pest technician, gaining hands-on experience and building a strong technical foundation. From there, I progressed into a surveyor role, focusing on identifying issues and delivering tailored solutions. I then moved into account management, working closely with clients to build strong and long-term relationships.
I have since combined these experiences and skills to take the next step of starting my own business. I now lead the company, applying everything I have learned across technical, commercial and leadership areas.
What is the most rewarding part of your job?
The most rewarding part of my job is solving issues and helping customers on a daily basis. Every situation is different, so it requires an investigative approach to fully understand the problem and put the right solution in place. There is a real sense of satisfaction in getting to the root cause and knowing you have made a genuine difference for someone.
No two days are the same. I learn something new every day. The industry constantly challenges me and satisfies my drive to develop, learn new things, and improve, which is a big part of what makes it so fulfilling.
What would you say to someone considering a career in Pest Control?
Keep an open mind! It might not be the career path you originally imagined, but it can be an incredibly rewarding one. If you enjoy problem-solving, working independently and applying practical skills, it is a great fit.
Many skills from other fields, especially scientific backgrounds like mine, transfer well into pest control. There are also strong opportunities for progression, whether that’s developing technically, moving into management or even starting your own business! It is a varied, challenging and genuinely fulfilling career.
