The review is a "hugely significant moment" for workplace health, RSPH says.

The publication of the Keep Britain Working Review comes at a hugely significant moment. More and more people are being forced to stop working due to their health. This is hugely damaging to individuals, employers, and to the strength of the economy we all depend on.

The Review rightly recognises that the workplace is a key setting for the prevention shift and that employers are perfectly placed to positively impact the health and wellbeing of their employees.

Critically, and as we have long called for, it recommends the need for universal workplace health provision backed up by a robust, evidence-based standard. It’s vital that this sets out a clear expectation of employers, as well as strong incentives to ensure that we reach parts of the workforce where health support is low or non-existent.

These recommendations could be game-changing. We stand ready to work with the Government to ensure that the benefits of prevention are felt across all UK workplaces. Every UK employee deserves the opportunity for a healthier working life.

The role of employers in preventing ill health

Employers have a key role to play in preventing ill health. We're pleased to see our contributions recognised, especially our calls for creating a supportive workplace culture that provides support at every stage, not just at crisis point.

In 2024, RSPH found that employers want to better support employee health, but struggle to know the best way to go about it. The Review's recommendation for the development of a clear certified standard for workplace health support, based on Mayfield's lifecycle approach, will be crucial to ensuring workplace health. It offers a clear direction for helping the ten mllion people who currently receive no health support at work.

Working with employers to support workplace wellbeing

We now need to see rapid action. The announcement of a small group of vanguard employers to test the best approaches is welcome, but we want to work with employers of every size to help them put robust support in place now. We cannot simply wait until the government mandates it.

That's why later this month we will be launching the Health and Work Network, bringing together employers to demonstrate their commitment to workplace wellbeing, share best practice and help inform what future standards look like. Fill out the form below to be the first to hear about it when it launches.
