Good growth can’t happen without good health

As the UK welcomes a new Prime Minister, it has never been more important to ensure that public health remains at the centre of UK and devolved policymaking.

Good health is shaped not only by the NHS, but by the places where we live, work and spend our time.

Andy Burnham brings a wealth of experience of community and place-based policymaking, both at national and regional levels. He has recognised that good housing, education, transport and a sustainable health service are all vital to helping people live healthier lives.

We welcome his plans to invest in our local high streets – something we have long advocated for. Anticipated changes to business rates will give local authorities the power to license businesses that improve the health of local communities, not worsen it.

Additionally, giving greater authority to regional mayors and local leaders will empower communities to shape the places where they spend their time, and enable policies to be tailored to local issues and inequalities.

Going beyond high streets

But to truly see improvements in health, we need measures to extend beyond our high streets. Tackling health inequalities, improving vaccine uptake, fixing social care, promoting physical activity and supporting workplace health and the workforce must all be at the heart of government policy to sustain the public health ecosystem.

For a better future, health must come first. By taking a joined-up approach and meeting people where they are, we can work together to improve health outcomes for all.
