Royal Society for Public Health, in partnership with Beingwell, launches a new online training module for our Understanding Sleep: Don't Hit Snooze on Your Health course to address the impact the pandemic has had on sleep and to help the public get a better night’s sleep.
Our report Disparity Begins at Home indicated that the pandemic and the long-lasting home working arrangements in particular, had a damaging impact on the quality of sleep. In our snapshot survey, over a third of the respondents (27%) reported having had less sleep, or increasingly disturbed sleep due to working from home. Preliminary findings from the International COVID-19 Sleep Study also indicated that the uncertainties associated with the pandemic have exposed most people to unprecedented anxiety and stress that affects sleep.
Our new module in our Understanding Sleep Course explores the immediate and long-term impact of COVID-19 pandemic on sleep and identifies tools to help participants get a better night’s sleep. The course will cover:
- the relationship between sleep and COVID-19
- the challenges to sleep during the pandemic
- sleep research studies
- resources to manage sleep
Christina Marriott, CEO of RSPH said:
“Covid-19 has given us plenty of reasons to lose sleep, and we know uncertainty, isolation from friends, excess screen time, home-schooling, and inadequate home-working arrangements all played a part in deteriorating sleep quality. We are delighted that the new module in our Understanding Sleep course will help participants better understand the importance of sleep and how this can improve their health and wellbeing.”
James Wilson, The Sleep Geek, VP of Content & Media, Beingwell said:
“Getting the sleep we need is something we are all entitled to, and the work I do with the Royal Society for Public Health to create advice and tips to help people sleep better is incredibly important. This update, taking into account the impact of COVID on our sleep, and how to realign our sleep as we, hopefully, come out of the pandemic, is a useful tool for anyone who has felt their sleep has worsened due to what we have all been through."
