New rules for the marketing of e-cigarettes have come into practice and RSPH fully welcomes their implementation.

Shirley Cramer CBE Chief Executive RSPH: “Electronic cigarettes are still a relatively new product and the new rules provide much needed guidance for industry. However there is still a need for further clarity over what is deemed as socially responsible advertising for the electronic cigarette sector.

"There is growing evidence that electronic cigarettes provide an effective way or quitting smoking and this message should prevail across all advertising without any reference to behaviours or language that could be deemed as glamorising the product. We look forward to seeing the guidance from the Adverting Standards Authority on this matter and urge them to implement it quickly.

We urge the industry to ensure their products are marketed in a way which comply with the rules and not to seek loopholes. We would still like to see stricter restrictions on the use of celebrity endorsement and promotions in marketing and will continue to push for regulation on these issues. We look forward to reading the review in 12 months time which we hope demonstrate the success of the new guidelines.”
