On the 12th September we hosted our annual conference and awards ceremony, which took place at RIBA, London. Attendees included members of RSPH and IHM, many of our trainers and public health professionals from a variety of backgrounds.

The conference featured talks from key public health figures exploring the current health climate in the UK and included Duncan Selbie, Chief Executive, Public Health England, Bob Hudson, Chief Executive, Public Health Wales and Shirley Cramer CBE, Chief Executive, RSPH.
 
 
 
 
 


Arts and Health Award Winners 2013

The Arts and Health Awards for Creative Arts and the Criminal Justice System in Secure Settings and the Community recognise significant contributions to research and practice in this rapidly developing field. The awards focus on the value of creative arts for young people or adults in custodial or secure settings or supervised by criminal justice agencies in the community.


The Practice Awards


Koestler Trust
The Koestler Trust is an inspirational arts based charity working in the Criminal Justice System throughout the United Kingdom. They have been running Awards programmes for offenders, secure patients, detainees and people on probation for 50 years. The award was accepted by Tim Robertson, Chief Executive of the Koestler Trust.

Irene Taylor Trust
For the past 17 years the Irene Taylor Trust ‘Music in Prisons’ (MiP) has been leading the way in using music education, creation and performance to develop a range of skills, thinking and behaviour in adults and young people in secure or custodial settings. The award was accepted by Luke Bowyer, Operations Manager for The Irene Taylor Trust and Joe Pattinson, Head of Reducing Reoffending at HMYOI Werrington.
 
Dance United
Dance United works with young people who have a chequered background and for various reasons find themselves caught up in the criminal justice system and/or marginalised by society. The charity creates new pieces of contemporary dance for the young people to perform by commissioning leading choreographers to collaborate with their own experienced dance artists. The award was accepted by Michelle Bynoe, Director of Academies and Training at Dance United.
 
Geese Theatre Company
Geese Theatre Company has a 25 year history of taking culture into prisons and custodial settings to work with people on the margins of society. Using theatre and drama to encourage people to examine their own behaviour and as a catalyst for personal development and change, Geese brings the arts in to focus for people who are in extremis. The award was accepted by Andy Watson, Artistic Director of Geese Theatre will accept the award on behalf of the company.
 

The Research Awards


Musical Pathways
Musical Pathways in an evaluation project exploring the value of music making for young people in young offenders settings. The partnership work between the University of the West of England, Live Music Now and Superact, on this project is a fine example of how sound research and evaluation procedures serve to strengthen music making projects. The award was accepted by Nick de Viggiani from The University of the West of England, Bristol and Patsy Lang from Live Music Now.

Arts Alliance Evidence Library
The Evidence Library hosts over 77 evaluations from across arts and criminal justice settings; including young people and adults in custodial and secure settings and those supervised by criminal justice agencies in the community. The Evidence Library makes this body of evidence accessible for funders, policy makers, researchers and arts practitioners. The award was accepted by Jessica Plant, Arts Alliance Manager, and Angus McLewin.

Public Health award


This year’s Public Health award, which recognises the author of the paper which received the most downloads from the journal Public Health during 2012, went to Sarah MacKay, of the Obesity Policy Coalition at Cancer Council Victoria, Australia with a paper titled ‘Legislative solutions to unhealthy eating and obesity in Australia’.
