RSPH Health & Wellbeing Awards - Community Health Development Finalist

Cancer Research UK 

Bradford District and Craven Clinical Commissioning Group identified late cancer presentations and low cancer screening programmes uptake within their population. Working with Cancer Research UK, interpreted training was delivered to South-Asian community groups in Urdu and Punjabi to demystify cancer, improve knowledge, and facilitate positive conversations within their community about cancer.

An excellent health promotion initiative which increases knowledge and confidence of people around preventing cancer. The development and engagement approaches are a great example of how to co-produce with communities, providing information and learning opportunities that are culturally competent and inclusive.

Cancer Research UK is delighted to be working in partnership with Bradford District and Craven Clinical Commissioning Group to deliver interpreted workshops in the Bradford area. Through this project, we’ve reached key groups who face extra barriers to accessing health information and services, and equipped trainees with relevant and accessible information to cascade to others in their community. 

Being a finalist in the Royal Society of Public Health’s Health and Wellbeing awards is a great achievement for Cancer Research UK’s Talk Cancer programme and for Bradford District and Craven CCG . It recognises the impact of multiple groups and organisations coming together to achieve a common purpose. Together we’re empowering the community towards collective action – creating inclusive and supportive environments for people to have impactful conversations about cancer and health.

In 2019 we ran our first programme of Talk Cancer workshops in Bradford and they were a great success, with excellent feedback and real examples of how people had used the training to have better conversations about cancer.   We knew that it was vital to make the workshops accessible to more of our population and we’ve worked with Cancer Research UK’s Talk Cancer team and Enable2 to make this a reality – not just translating the content, but adapting the information to be culturally appropriate and to address the questions and concerns of our South Asian communities. By working closely with interpreters and community organisations, these workshops have reached into communities that are too often excluded and will hopefully have a ‘ripple effect’ to spread accurate information about cancer that will have a real impact on health outcomes.
