RSPH Health & Wellbeing Awards - Health Equity Winner

Brighton & Hove LGBT Switchboard

Brighton & Hove LGBT Switchboard's Dementia Support Project supports LGBTQ+ people living with or affected by dementia. It reaches out to people who may have felt disempowered from accessing traditional mainstream services and provides opportunities for valuable social connections and peer support. The project also provides training and support to health and social care services on the needs of LGBTQ+ communities affected by dementia. Starting in Brighton & Hove, the project now works throughout East Sussex and West Sussex.

 

A strong application showcasing the activities of the B&H LGBTQ Switchboard in helping LGBTQ persons experiencing memory loss and/or dementia. B&H have developed excellent links with other agencies to ensure that those not experienced in supporting/caring for LGBTQ persons can get easy access to appropriate information and advice.

Switchboard’s Dementia Support Project has been a lifeline for myself and my partner. It is the one place we can go where we know we can talk safely and confidentially about the impact of dementia within a same sex relationship. In this LGBT+ support group we know that members have a shared, as well as different, histories, experiences, support networks and expectations and have all experienced homophobia, prejudice and oppression. We have more in common than our differences. Being part of our Switchboard group has validated our experiences, created camaraderie and opportunities to join in some of the wider dementia activities including gardening, walks and input into planning dementia friendly spaces. We come away with a smile on our face, some coping strategies and some new friendships and that really helps.
