RSPH Health & Wellbeing Awards - Healthier Lives Winner

Hackney is a deprived borough in London, with high levels of obesity and inactivity. GLL operates affordable leisure facilities across Hackney through the Healthier Together Hackney programme offering both weight management and physical activity on referral programmes to those who are inactive or have health conditions or related risk factors.  The programme is the most successful and comprehensive within all of GLL’s facilities - and across Hackney receives around 4000 referrals every year. The team calls and speaks to every single one of these members of the public in need of health support, aiming to book them in for crucial health-related activities.

 

 

A strong application from a well-established programme which is clearly achieving positive outcomes and extending its reach. The programme goes beyond an individualised approach to weight management with initiatives to address some of the wider determinants of health through local employment initiatives, volunteering ‘champion’ opportunities and support for the wider community.

I continue to be immensely proud of the whole team and their achievements, and feel that this nomination is testament to their hard work and dedication, and is very well deserved.

The Healthier Together Hackney scheme has been life changing for many residents, and not only has a positive impact on people’s day to day lives, but was (in some instances) a life line for people during the pandemic. This is a real example of a social enterprise at its best!

I want to personally thank the team involved in the delivery of the service, along with the support teams who work extremely hard to continue to develop and adapt. I know I’m also speaking on behalf of the Hackney residents when I say thank you for your hard work, commitment and dedication in making this the biggest and best programme offered.
