RSPH has rewarded the charity HENRY (Health Exercise Nutrition for the Really Young) with accreditation for its Healthy Families: Tackling Child Obesity with HENRY programme.

The programme provides health and early years practitioners with the skills they need to support families of babies and young children develop a healthy lifestyle and in so doing reduce child obesity.

The UK is among the most overweight nations in Europe. By the age of just five years old nearly one in four children is either overweight or obese. Evidence shows that the lifestyle habits developed in the early years have a profound impact on future weight status with around 80% of obese children going on to be obese as adults.

Obesity is associated with type 2 diabetes, heart disease and stroke. HENRY is a solution-focused intervention that works co-operatively with parents, by offering positive reinforcement in order to initiate behaviour change.

As part of the accreditation process, the Healthy Families: Tackling Child Obesity with HENRY programme underwent an expert assessment looking at how effectively it equips health and early years practitioners with the knowledge, skills and confidence to effectively and sensitively provide support to the parents of babies and young children at risk of long-term obesity.

Shirley Cramer CBE, Chief Executive of RSPH said: “We were all extremely impressed with the high standard of HENRY’s training course, and the model of this intervention. I’d like to congratulate HENRY on running such an outstanding training programme. It’s through working collaboratively with parents and communities that groups like HENRY can make an impact on the type of health inequality that has increased the level of childhood obesity in recent years.”

Kim Roberts, Chief Executive of HENRY said: “We are absolutely delighted that HENRY’s suite of trainings courses has been accredited by RSPH. It’s recognition of the impact these trainings have on practitioners’ professional practice and the improved outcomes this can then deliver for the families they support”
